With about 45 affiliated industrial unions that cut across every facet of Nigeria’s economy, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) is the largest labour centre in the African continent.
Officially estimated to have over 8 million members, unofficial estimate however; says that the mother of the organised labour in Nigeria (NLC) has about 10 million members, making it truly the largest trade union Organisation in Africa.
Founded in 1978 following a merger of four different trade union organisations namely: Nigeria Trade Union Congress (NTUC), Labour Unity Front (LUF), United Labour Congress (ULC) and Nigeria Workers Council (NWC), the NLC is the strongest voice that advocates for workers’ and citizens welfare in Nigeria.
Between 1978 and 2020, the NLC has have as it presidents; Hassan Sumonu (1st), Ali Ciroma (2nd), Adams Osunde Lasis (3rd), Pascal Bayfau (4th), Adams Aliyu Oshimohole (5th), Abdulwaheed Omar (6th) and Ayuba Wabba (7th).
